AI GOVERNANCE MATTERS
Why does AI governance readiness matter?
Responsible AI is more than a policy
Many organisations now have an AI policy.
The more important question is whether responsible AI governance is actually operating in practice and aligned with AI regulatory expectations.
- Can you show how AI Systems are identified?
- How risk is assessed?
- Who is accountable?
- What controls are operating?
- How human oversight works?
- How incidents are managed?
And what evidence demonstrates that these activities actually happen?
The Trust AI Governance Readiness Check helps you move beyond statements of intent and understand the current state of AI governance across your organisation.
What does the AI Governance Readiness Check tell you?
The readiness check assesses your current AI governance across the 13 mandatory domains of the Trust AI Standard. It is designed for organisations that develop AI, deploy AI, use third party AI, or use AI embedded within existing business platforms and services.
The check helps you answer five practical questions
1. Are we governing AI responsibly? Understand whether appropriate governance, accountability, risk, oversight, security, transparency and other essential measures are in place.
2. Where are our gaps? Identify the areas that need attention across the 13 Trust AI governance domains.
3. Can we demonstrate it? Understand whether governance is only documented or whether it is operating and supported by evidence.
4. How aligned are we? Understand how your governance supports major international AI regulatory, standards and governance expectations such as EU AI Act, OECD AI Principles, ISO 42001, UAE AI Charter etc.
5. Are we ready for certification? Identify what may need to improve before progressing towards Trust AI Essentials and Trust AI Essentials Plus certification.

CROSS BORDER AI REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS ALIGNMENT
AI Governance Readiness Across Multiple Regulatory and Standards Expectations
AI is global. Governance, AI regulations and compliance expectations are fragmented.
Organisations may need to respond to different AI regulatory, standards, customer and governance expectations depending on where they operate and who they serve.
The Trust AI Standard provides a unified AI governance and control framework aligned with leading international expectations including:
EU AI Act
ISO IEC 42001
NIST AI Risk Management Framework
OECD AI Principles
UAE AI Charter
The Trust AI governance readiness check helps you understand how your current AI governance supports alignment with these expectations and where further work may be required.
Organisations searching for an EU AI Act readiness assessment, ISO 42001 readiness assessment or broader AI governance assessment can use the Trust AI Governance Readiness Check to establish a common governance baseline across these different expectations.
Common FREQUENTLY ASKED questions
AI governance readiness questions answered
1. What is an AI governance readiness assessment?
It is a structured review of whether an organisation can demonstrate how its AI systems are governed. A useful one does not ask whether you have a policy. It asks what evidence you hold against each governance domain, and whether an independent party could examine it. This check covers thirteen domains in fifteen questions and takes about five minutes.
2. How long does the readiness check take?
About six minutes. Fifteen questions, four possible answers each. You see your result immediately and your full thirteen domain report arrives by email.
3. Is it really free?
Yes. No cost, no card, no trial. You also get a free consultation meeting if you want one. If you do not, keep the report and close the gaps yourself. The framework is published either way.
4. What are the thirteen domains of the Trust AI Standard?
The thirteen domain of the Trust AI Standard are Governance, ethics and accountability. AI system inventory and risk classification. Risk assessment and impact evaluation. Legal, regulatory and contractual compliance. Data governance and privacy protection. Fairness and bias mitigation. Transparency, explainability and disclosure. Human oversight and intervention. Security and technical safeguards. Robustness, validation and performance monitoring. AI supply chain and third party dependencies. AI incident management and harm response. Operational resilience and continuity.
5. Does this assess our AI models?
No. The AI governance readiness check focuses on organisational AI governance rather than technical model performance testing. It does not assess AI model accuracy, model weights or technical model performance. This means it can be used whether your organisation develops AI itself, deploys third party AI, or uses AI embedded within existing business systems.
6. Does a good score mean we are compliant with the EU AI Act?
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. The Trust AI Standard is mapped to the EU AI Act, the OECD AI Principles, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001 and the UAE AI Charter, so the evidence you build supports each of them. Certification demonstrates governance. It does not replace legal or regulatory obligations and does not certify legal compliance.
7. How does this relate to ISO/IEC 42001?
The two approaches are complementary. ISO/IEC 42001 provides requirements for the AI management system. The Trust AI Standard provides a controls based AI governance and assurance framework with risk tiers, defined evidence requirements and independent certification. Organizations may find that AI governance artefacts developed for one approach can support the other, although each has its own scope, requirements and assessment criteria.
8. What happens after the AI Governance readiness check?
You receive your full report covering all thirteen domains with the evidence requirement for each. If you want to go further, you can book a free consultation to review your results, discuss your governance priorities and understand your pathway towards Trust AI Essentials and, where greater independent assurance is required, subsequent progression to Trust AI Essentials Plus.
9. What is the difference between Trust AI Essentials and Essentials Plus?
Both assess the same thirteen domains. Trust AI Essentials is an independently verified self assessment. Trust AI Essentials Plus adds a comprehensive independent audit conducted by an approved Certification Body, with a written assessment report. Both produce a certificate, a certification mark and a public registry listing.
10. Do you store our answers?
Your answers and contact details are stored so we can send your report and, if you ask for one, arrange your FREE no obligation consultation. We do not sell or share your data. No information about your AI systems beyond the answers you give is collected.
11. Is the AI Governance Readiness Check a certification assessment?
No. The readiness check is an indicative self assessment based on the answers you provide. It does not independently verify your evidence and it is not a certification assessment or audit.
Its purpose is to help you understand your current governance position, identify gaps and determine what may need to improve before progressing towards Trust AI certification.
